Ramiro ARRUE La baie de St-Jean-de-Luz The painting of Ramiro Arrue (Bilbao,1892) is simple, without unnecessary details, purified, his subjects are clear and bare descriptions... Il revient toujours au Pays basque, à Saint-Jean-de-Luz, où il s'installe en 1917, et où il puise toute son inspiration: paysages, portraits, scènes quotidiennes. Ramiro Arrue remains the most representative painter of the Basque country and his soul. "The peace which detaches from its painting makes us see the silence, quiet, serenity". He was a friend of Jammes, Ravel and Cocteau. En 1943 il a été emprisonné par les Allemands dans la Citadelle de Saint-Jean-de-Pied-de-Port. En 1948 il a réalisé les affiches et les décors de Ramuntcho de Pierre Loti qui s'est représenté à Bayonne. En 1953 il a illustré Jean le Basque de Joseph Peyré... En 1958 died his wife, Suzanne. The end of his life is marked by loneliness and deprivation. He died in April 1971 of lung cancer, in Saint Jean de Luz. |

Encouraged by Zuloaga, exhibits his first paintings in 1911 at the Salon of Paris. Paintings of dark colors and in the realistic way, they already represent the daily life of the people of Vizcaya. He alternates the winter stays in Paris and holidays in Ciboure, before settling in 1917 in Saint Jean de Luz. Membre de l’Association des artistes basques, notamment ami de Maurice Ravel, donne aussi de nombreuses illustrations pour des ouvrages honorant le Pays Basque,
tel Le Mariage basque de Francis Jammes ou le fameux Ramuntcho de Pierre Loti.

Circa 1865, an emigrant polish, Ladislas Konarzewski, expelled from his country by the russians, come to live in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. He'll become photographer, the town's photographer, Mr Ladislas, as he was called then. And learn the basque language. He takes as a wife to Maria Ithurbide, from the House of the same name in Urrugne (at 5 km from Saint-Jean) Installed in the angle between the streets Garat and Courtade, just next to the 'hotel of England'; it will leave an exceptional testimony to the metamorphoses of the town and surroundings: the beach is still wild, dikes are under construction, the swamps barely dry. His son, Jean-Ladislas, reprendra le studio et complétera ce legs offert à l’histoire locale. Il livrera un travail sur le port et les pêcheurs tout à fait remarquable. His grand-daughter, Jacqueline, contribuera elle aussi jusqu’à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et laisse des photos fortes de cette période trouble. |
